Introduction to Automobile

1.1 Introduction & Definition of Automobile

In the 'Introduction to Automobile', we learn the types of automobiles their mechanism of transmission (final drive) systems & its applications, automobile industry & its history, major automobile components like chassis, frame, body, power drive etc., and advanced automobile safety system, electric systems & devices.

'Automobile' is a wheeled motor vehicle (land vehicle), which powered or propelled by an IC engine, and it is used for transportation of passengers & goods on the ground. A motor vehicle which can move by itself. And say, it is self-propelled vehicle. Most definitions of automobile say, a motor vehicle have run primarily on roads, seat one to eight people, have four tires, and mainly transport people rather than goods. Examples are Car, jeep, bus, truck, scooter or motor cycle etc.

Automobile engineering deals with everything about automobiles and different practices to propel the automobile.

The different types of automobile vehicles are used for transportation of passengers & goods. It may be as per uses, application and or type work. The various choices are available in today’s market.

Basically all the types of vehicles works on the principle of internal combustion processes or sometimes the engines are called as internal combustion engines.

Different types of fuels are burnt inside the cylinder at higher temperature & pressure to get the transmission motion in the vehicles. Most of the automobiles are propelled or powered by IC engines only.

But current scenario different power plants (sources) are available for propelled the automobile. The different power sources are like battery or electric power, solar power, hydrogen water fuels, and much more renewable resources. But those also have some limitations to application on automobile.

Therefore, every mechanical and automobile engineer should have the knowledge of automobile engineering its mechanism and its various applications.

Automobile is a combination of large number of parts. Automobile can be divided into two major constituents the body and the chassis.

The body is that part where passengers have occupies their seats or the luggage and other placed cargo to be carried.

The chassis is the principle of any automobiles skeleton portion in which have constituents like frame, engine, transmission, axles, steering system, controls, wheels & tyres etc. that are all build together to make an automaton.

Automobile Chassis Layout

Automobile is made up of the following major components:

(A) Frame work / Basic structure,

(B) Engine,

(C) Trans-mission system,

(D) Controls,

(E) Auxiliaries,

(F) Superstructure,

(G) Body / Coachwork.

(A to E, becomes chassis component).

The basic structure
: It consists of the frame, the suspension system, axles, wheels and tyres.

The engine: it is the primary need or power source of any automobile. It provides the motive power for motion of the vehicle. Once engine is functions well then all the various systems performing properly. The automobile engines are mostly an internal combustion types.

The transmission system: It consists of a clutch, a gear  box and a propeller shaft to transmit the  torque output from the  gear  box to the rear  axle  and  a differential gear to  distribute the final torque equally between the  driving wheels. This is all about the short description of final drive.

The controls: They consist of steering system and the brakes.

The auxiliaries: The principle one out of these is the electrical system.

The superstructure: In those cases where frameless construction is not adopted there must be a superstructure. A superstructure is an upward extension of an existing basic structure above a baseline. It may be say the degree of freedom is zero for that construction. The superstructure might be separated from its foundation (framework) by engine and other moving parts vibration. All together, these implement the system of damage protection called base isolation.

The body: body is nothing but the face of automobile. Body is provide ergonomics feature in any automobile. It consist of doors, windows, side panels, fenders, front & rear bumpers, grille, pillar etc. Automobile body have provide safe, comfort, protected & pleasant environment for all the passengers.
